The term Afro Bap emerged with the release of his first body of work, Afro Bap Volume 1, an eight-track project that serves as an early glimpse into his evolving sound. Later, like many young listeners discovering their voice, he was drawn into the gravitational pull of hip-hop. Artists like Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, and A Tribe Called Quest became sonic landmarks along the way.

Closer to home, pioneers of South Africa’s African Trap and Tshepe movements—names like Sjava, Saudi, Emtee, and Malome Vector—have shaped the cultural language that Shuwa expresses through his music. Afro Bap sits right at the crossroads of those worlds, where the “Bap” nods to the classic boom bap foundation that hip-hop legends built, and the “Afro” brings that rhythm back home, grounding it in African realities, stories, and sonic textures.
